MC 6: Celtic Monastacism

1 comment:

  1. -Begun around 5th or 6th cent.
-Origins are attributed to Patrick, but there is no real proof
-Patrick seems to have encouraged a type of asceticism before 325
-The form of Monasticism in Ireland seems to follow the Egyptian pattern (Arrangment of cells within outer boundary walls)
-Martin of Tour’s monastic ideals may have influenced them
-Scholastic endeavors may have been encouraged by continental-European scholars who fled barbarian invasians of the 5th century
-Irish monasteries greatly influenced Church life because of the lack of large towns
-Irish monks wandered rather than staying in one spot
-Benedict’s rule may also have influenced them
    -BV
