MP 11: Leo the Great

    -Bishop of Rome in 440
    -advanced primacy of the Roman Church
    -used Matt 16:19 “You are Peter” to mean the Pope
    -Emperor Valentinian III backed him (although this was unenforceable in the East)
    -Influenced by Roman law in his administration
    -Fought against stress of divinity of Christi at the expense of the humanity
    -wrote Tome, stressing unity of Christ: this was disregarded at Ephesus (449) but used at Chalcedon (451)
    -Persuaded Atila the Hun to turn back from rome
    -minimized damage done to Rome by the Vandal leader Gaiseric

  2. Leo I (Leo the Great) is best known for his assertion of Rome's Papal authority and expansion of its territorial influence (to Africa, Spain and Gaul).

    His support was greatly pursued by rival theologies/ theologians at the council of Chalcedon. His name would have given the respective sides greater authority and political power.

    His Tome was accepted as standard Christological orthodoxy. It's uniqueness was in that it targeted the heresy of Eutyches (Christ was a mixture of 2 natures, but neither one was full/ 100%) and was adopted at Chalcedon (Olson 245).
