2 comments:

  1. -became emperor in 361
    -nephew of Constantine
-Revealed he was a pagan after becoming emperor
    -influenced by Neoplatonic magician/medium Maximus
-tried to convert the empire to “Hellenism”, an organized Pagan Church whose deity was Plato’s supreme being, whose representative was the Sun/Helios/Mithras. This was a hybrid of Greek Culture, mythology, ritual, and the “lofty monotheism of the Sun”.
-He tried to set up a hierarchy like the Church.
-He encouraged virtues like those of the Church
-Took away priviledges of Christian clergy
-No open persecution of Christians during his reign
    -Religious toleration was decreed
-Christians were prohibited from teaching literature

  2. Julian was proclaimed emperor by the Roman army. He was adamantly pagan and tried to subvert Christianity in every way he could, short of open persecution. Ultimately, he was struck by an arrow and killed in his conquest against the Persians.
