  1. Bishop of Milan, elected in 374 after an Arian bishop died (even though not yet baptized)
    -Came from a noble Roman family and had a classical education
    -Famous as preacher, church administrator and politician
    -opposed Pagan Symmachus who wanted goddess Victory restored in Senate House
    -Stood up against Arianism and completed its overthrow in the west
    -Clashed with Empress—Mother Justina when she tried to take over a Milan Church for Arianism. He organized a sit-in.
    -Close advisor to emperor Theodosius at his court in Milan. Prevented him from punishing monks who burned down a synagogue in Callinicum.
    -First Church leader to coerce civil rulers
    -Encouraged Monasticism in the West
    -Baptized Augustine

  2. He was tenacious in defending the church from the meddling of civic powers and asserted his authority with successive generations of Roman emperors.

    One of his best known writings was on Christian ethics and it was through his influence that hymns became part of the Western Church's liturgy.

  3. Aside from completing an upset against Arianism, Ambrose's writings mainly concerned Christian practice.
