23. Be prepared to identify which two of the twenty one Roman Catholic ecumenical councils were most significant with regard to the discussion of ecumenism and Pro-testantism and why.

  1. Trent and Vatican II. Trent codified the “counter-reformation,” which reformed a lot of the medieval excesses of the Church and reacted to the Protestant Reformation. Vatican II introduced sweeping changes in the way the Vatican conceived of its relationship to the Protestants and the outside world. Services were offered in native languages for the first time.
