Cyril of Alexandria -Succeded Theophilus as patriarch of Alexandria -Main concern was to combat Nestorianism (believed Christ had two wills) -Convened the Council of Alexandria in 430 -demanded that Nestorius recant -Headed the Council of Ephesus in 431, deposed Nestorius -preserved Christ’s living unity against Nestorian dualism -however using the term “one nature” he was blamed for reviving “Appollinarianism” which led to Eutychianism which led to Monophysitism
Saint Cyril of Alexandria defended use of the Gk. word for "mother of God" (theotokos) under the defense that Mary was not just the mother of Jesus' humanity, but of his humanity and his divinity because of Christ's one nature/ one will.
He was the best representative of Alexandrian theology, and systematized classical Greek doctrines of the Trinity and the person of Christ.
He had Nestorius deposed before the Antiochene bishops ever arrived for the 431 Council of Ephesus.
