  2. According to Olson (187), the "real" contribution of Greg of Nazianzus lies in his explanation of HYPOSTASES (or "persons" in English). The Trinity is not 3 persons, but 3 RELATIONSHIPS. He gave ontological status to these relationships. Each has a unique identity, but as a relationship between the others:

    The Son is eternally generated from the Father and his express image and agent.

    The Holy Spirit is the one who eternally proceeds from the Father as his wisdom and power.

    The Father's uniqueness is in that he is the begetter of the Son, and the source of the Holy Spirit's PROCESSION (but not the Holy Spirit himself).

  3. G of Nazianzus was also a guy who didn't like being in the spotlight and got out of the kitchen (too much heat) and retired from being the bishop of Constantinople as soon as he could.

    Hold title as the great defender of orthodox trinitarian thought (Olson 178).
