    -Leading biblical scholar in the West
    -Studied the “classical” disciplines
    -became an ascetic
    -accused of his secular learning making him a ‘follower of Cicero and not of Christ’
    -this made him withdraw to asceticism in the Syrian desert and learn Hebrew
    -Studied with Gregory of Nazianzus in 380
    -Tried to improve the Latin translation of the Bible
    -was secretary to Pope Damasus in Rome in 382
    -Settled down to monastic life in Bethlehem in 386: he completed his translations and commentaries on scripture
    -He first used the LXX, then used a Hebrew Original and composed the Vulgate (382-405)
    -sought to moderate b/w allegorical and literal interpretations
    -historical
    -symbolic
    -spiritual

  2. According to Oxford, Jerome's biggest achievement was creating a Latin translation of the Bible from its original languages. He is also known for his scriptural commentaries and advocacy of accepting the Hebrew texts as part of canon (except for the Apocrypha).

    He is also known for his practice and preaching of extreme asceticism.
